East Dorset Weekend
Fri 10th July to Sun 12th July 2015 |
“Be early” was the email from Nigel.
12 had assembled in the clubhouse at Dorset Golf and Country Club in the morning. It was early afternoon when the cry went out “where’s Nigel”. He was late !!! Well at least he was the last to arrive. In his absence the draw was made for the pairs competition by Lyn drawing names concealed on folded strips of paper.
Colin was paired with John P as current holders. The drawn pairings was Bruce & Keith B, Nigel & Phil, Lynn &
Keith R, Mark & Brian, John G with John E. Andy Atkins drew John G as his partner.
Finally two o’ clock came and we commenced on the Lakeland course. Oh dear, one hour had elapsed and only 3 holes had been completed by the first 4 ball. We were looking at 6 hours and dinner at 9pm !!! Fortunately the course clerk was out in his buggy and moved things along and we were in by 7.30pm. The back nine was on the Parkland course and John G obviously took a liking to the slow play and came in with 33points. Followed by Keith R on 30 and
Keith B came third on 29.
NTP went to a very delighted Lynn and LD went to Phil. (remember this name !)
A fine meal was eaten later than expected with the red wine freely flowing afterwards.
For some members it was to the detriment to their well being and much worse, it affected their memory !!!
Saturday morning came, breakfast was taken and we all trudged off to the Woodland course to be followed by the Parkland course. A much quicker round ensued, maybe not to the liking of John G as he came
fifth on 29, Keith R was beaten on countback by Nigel on 31.
Perhaps the red wine improved his game. Not sure whether the red wine was flowing as freely that evening but certainly the dinner was excellent again. The superb food being very much a plus point over the weekend.
After two previous days of glorious sunshine, Sunday proved to be rather a damp squid. Light persistent drizzle with the occasional respite. Where’s Nigel was the cry again at breakfast !!! He had lost his wallet, oh Nigel !! When did you last use it ? Where did you last
see it ? I don’t remember was the reply. That red wine had the last laugh. It was found ,in his car, in a golf shoe. I don’t remember how it got there he muttered under his breath.
We all breathed a lot easier and set off for the Woodland course followed by the Lakeland course. Play was slow for a while but quickened after 6 or 7 holes. Once again the conditions clearly suited John G as he came in with 34. Followed by John P, Nigel, Phil and Keith R with 32.
If you think I had missed the NP & LD on the Saturday then you are wrong. In saving editorial space and not wishing to be repetitive Phil had won them both and repeated the feat on Sunday !!!!
He must like chocolate balls !!!
There was an extra NP on Sunday which was won by Mark. However the Captain was in disgrace as the first NP should have been on hole 4 was hastily rearranged for the 6th. He
apologises for those who had made the green on the 4th.
We all assemble in the clubhouse as the weather was still “iffy” and the ultimate winners were as follows:
SINGLES - BRIAN CLIST CUP - John Green 96 points RUNNER- UP - Keith Rutter 93 points
PAIRS CUP - Phil Lee and Nigel Etheridge with 102 points (Not Duckworth Lewis method but
Bruce's)
BEST SUPPORTING GOLFER – allegedly ! John Edwards
ECLECTIC SINGLES (whatever that is ) - Keith Rutter with 115.5
points
(See links to all the results on the left)
A huge thank you to Nigel for organising the day. Many many thanks to Lynn and Bruce with the scorecards and data input. Thank you all for coming and making this a very very enjoyable annual event.
Nigel has already booked again for next year ( Friday 8th July
2016) with an earlier start on Friday at Midday to ensure an earlier dinner. Please, please put the date in your diaries now and it really would be nice to see everybody again next year.

East Dorset Weekend
Fri 18th to Sun 20th July 2014 |
This is the third year that Nigel had arranged this weekend and our thanks go to him for organising this year.
It is obvious that it is now proving to be popular as 13 members and one guest (a guest of Zippy’s, Andy Atkins), duly arrived before lunch to witness the drawing of pair’s (other than Colin & John P, who were allowed to defend their title) and the order of play for that day.
There appeared to be a few ailments around and the aroma of Ralgex spray was there for everyone to smell. A very slow round in pretty hot clammy conditions of 5 hours proved to be the undoing of some of the players but Mark Green proved an exception by coming home with 35 points, followed by the captain and Bruce with 32 points. Nearest the pin went to Colin Lindsell and longest drive went to Mark Green.
The evening meal as indeed all the food consumed over the weekend proved to have the seal of approval, except a couple of cheesy toasties which were considered to be “a mess”. The next morning , after a night’s sleep on the bathroom floor, ralgex was replaced with Whisky , the walls were thin I could hear them talking all night etc etc
We assembled for a 10.52am start. BUT is was raining, thundering and lightning. However we did tee off in time only to be stopped an hour or so later because the heavens opened with a vengeance again, this time we all took shelter and that lightning was so so close, scary not the word. However the rain stopped eventually and we all went back to clubhouse as the course was totally waterlogged. Come 1 o’clock we ventured out again in a little rain and thunder to be heard in the distance. How that course became playable so quickly was obviously down to the terrain but the sun soon came out again for the rest of the afternoon and after a few preferred lies later on the fairway and the greens we had our second winner. Phil L had amassed 36 points with John P next on 34 and Mark on 33 points. Mark took the longest drive again and Phil H took the nearest the pin.
We won’t mention the throwing of a wedge nor indeed some expletives being uttered when having trouble getting out of a bunker, but all was in earshot of our lady treasurer. Apologies were given rather quickly !!!!! An evening’s entertainment from Zippy after another very pleasant meal was consumed in the evening. Did Zippy and Andy really do those things !!!!! I feel a few stories were left untold.
An early Sunday morning ensemble at 8.52am under a glorious sun got underway with the top four single scores held by Mark, Phil L, Keith R and Colin being put together. Scoring was very tight at the halfway stage with Phil dropping away, Colin being consistent, and Keith failing to score on the 18th allowed Mark ( 100 points) to take the honours with the inaugural
BRIAN CLIST CLARET JUG. However the score of the day went to John P who came home with 37 points with John G on 35 points and the captain on 33 points. John P came second in the overall singles (97 points) with the captain third on (96 points). Nearest the pin on the day went to Keith Beilby and the longest drive went to Phil
Hawkes.
After two rounds Colin and John P were in front in the pairs with only 11 points covering the top six pairs. However with scores on the Sunday they romped home with a combined 189 points from in second place with 178 accrued by Phil L and Nigel. A trophy was donated by Colin and presented to them. There have been no handicaps amendments on the single scores, only a one shot cut to Mark Green for winning the singles and one shot each to Colin and John P for winning the pairs. Yes, Colin and John, final decision. No appeals allowed !!!!
Finally the best supported trophy was presented to Lyn for her contribution of 61 points. Hope Colin has repaired it !!!! Thank you again Nigel.

Dorset golf and country Club - Fri 7th to Sun 9th
June 2013 |
|
Many thanks to Nigel for organising this event and to Zippy for the emails.
Eight of us arrived midday on Friday to a warm spring
day. After some sustenance we teed off in two groups at 01.56pm only to
find on the third hole the heavens opened and it poured down for about ten
minutes but soon we were back in the sun to dry off as
quickly as we got wet. The Lakeland / Parkland course was first up and
the captain made the most of it by returning 33 points, followed by Phil and
John P with 31 and 30 respectively. Longest drive (LD)
went to Nigel and nearest the pin (NTP) to John P. The evening meal
proved to everybody’s liking followed by a few bevvies.
Saturday’s tee time was 10.36 am after an
unhealthy breakfast, so said Brian, but don’t tell Val.” It could
be a few months before he would eat bacon again”! Nobody told him Bacon
rolls were on the menu at our next meet on 22nd June!!
Saturday was a hot day with Keith B coming in with 33 points hotly
pursued by Colin and Phil on 32. The prize of the day went to Colin and John
P with 39 points (better ball stableford). LD to Colin
and NTP to Phil L.
Sunday started very cool at 8.20 am but
hotted up during the morning, weather and golf, as pairs battled
it out with a combined stableford score as well as the singles cumulative
competition. Colin and John P came out as winners
again with 63 points, one in front of Nigel and Phil, with Brian and Keith
B a further shot back. We will not mention the fourth pair and their
disastrous scores on both days!! LD went Colin and NTP
to Phil L. The eventual singles winner was actually shared between Keith
B and Phil with 94 points over the three days. The final “booby” prize
went to John E with a final score of 62 points. Did not quite live up to the
shirt he was wearing “The Best Golfer” !!!
A brilliant weekend had by all and thanks
again for the organisers. Not forgetting the caterers, the food
was brilliant !! |
