CHIDDINGFOLD DEC 2023

Postponed as course waterlogged

TOURNERBURY  Nov 2023

After the October event being cancelled and the course being closed during the preceding week we eventually got to play on a rare bright sunny dry day.
Six of us turned up and as it was Armistice day a minutes silence was observed on the first tee.
Surprisingly the course was in a good condition with only a couple of areas of standing water although there was not much run on the fairways, the greens were dry and running true and quite fast.
Steve and John G led the way on the first nine with 16 points each and Steve taking the nearest the pin prize on the 5th.
I think we achieved a first for the society with John G managing to get himself electrocuted when addressing his ball that landed close to an electric fence, as they say he didn't arf get a belt. Thankfully he was ok but his hair was a bit spiky !
On receiving the cards Bruce pointed out a local rule regarding electric fences (of course we all read this ) stating that a ball coming to rest within two club lengths of an electric fence MUST be lifted and dropped within one club length. So something
for us all to bear in mind for the future. In Johns defence he did say there was no evidence of any warning signs.
Steve took the nearest the pin in two on the 10th hole and maintained his excellent round by scoring 18 points on the second nine for a total of 34 points and winning with a clean sweep and the day being known as the Steve Stickland show!!!
John came in second with 30 points and Keith third with 27.
Steve gets a one shot cut to 18 (he wasn't best pleased with the suggestion of a further cut for winning all of the prizes) and Rob gains a shot.
Thanks to all for attending and hope to see you all at the next outing which Rob is looking to organise in early December.

TOURNERBURY  OCT 2023

Postponed

EAST HORTON Sept 2023 (Capts Cup)

A late Captain’s Cup saw 5 members attend at East Horton Golf Club. Bruce had to withdraw before the start as he has not fully recovered from his eye operation. Hopefully he will have recovered sufficiently to play in the next match.
We started as a 3 and 2 ball but after just two holes John Edwards had to retire and we became a four ball. John has fully recovered and should be fit to join us in October.
The course was a bit damp in places with some puddles on the 1st, found by Andy. The greens were very fast and once dried out in the afternoon sun became quicker. The first nearest the pin was missed.
We then had a nearest in two which was won by Rob who landed on the Green with his drive.
We had a longest drive won by Keith. Keith struggled with trees on many holes which is not like him.
The second nearest the pin was also won by Rob.
Rob had a very consistent round and was the winner with 34 points followed yet again by Andy coming 2nd with 27. Keith was 3rd with Tom close behind.
A good day for the 4 who completed the difficult course. Glad we didn’t have to do another 11 holes.
Next match Tournerbury on 21st October. Organised by Keith.

Rookwood August 2023

After securing an early team time on a bright sunny morning the day bode well.
On checking in we were told that the greens had been worked on during the week and offered a £10 reduction in green fees.
9 members and guests teed off which was a great turn out for mid August.
The fairways were in fair condition but the greens were a bit bumpy due to the maintenance work.
The weather held for most of the round. A short shower of almost biblical proportions did hamper play towards the end of the round.
Rookwood for some proved to be challenging while other enjoyed the long wide fairways.
Back in the clubhouse it was good to see Phil Lee back with us for a short break from sunnier climes.
The results for the day are as follows:
Bruce Santer 35
Andy Sweeney 32
Phil Lee 28
Tom O’Brien 26
Rob Holmes 26
Steve Stickland 26
Tony Johnson 20
Jacob Heller 18
John Edwards 12
Nearest the pin went to Steve Stickland.
Bruce is cut to 17 and Tony goes to 27
Well done to Bruce for winning the day.
Next Golf day is 30th September for the Captains Cup. Only 18 holes this year.

Chilworth July 2023

A total of 5 hardy souls attended this fixture . The weather forecast was fair with rain expected late in the day. The forecast was wrong.!!! It started to rain whilst we had coffee and Danish pasteries and didn't stop all day. Due to the weather we all lost that fairway run the dry firm conditions of late have afforded us all. lnstead the ball just stopped. Even worse in the rough long stuff we all seem to prefer or end up in, I'm not sure which.
The front half proved difficult for all. The longest drive on the 9th being taken by Steve not long but the only one to stay on the Fairway. The scoring on the second half improved for all, Keith taking the nearest the pin on the 17th. Tom did claim his shot off to the right of the green may have been closel but it still has to be on the green Tom. The overall winner was Steve with 30 points on the day. Meaning a one shot reduction next time out. John, Bruce and Keith all get a shot back. Thanks for those who attended and looking forward to Andy's event on Sat 12th Aug at Rookwood

Chiddingfold June 2023

On a very warm mid summers day nine members and guests took on the challenge of Chiddingfold. A frequent guest, Paul Brown, was joined by Tom's son Dan and son in law Gareth Renault. Plenty of sun cream and fluids were the order of the day whilst the recent hot, dry spell saw fast greens and the opportunities for long drives.

On the front nine, Bruce scored well with an impressive score of 24. Nearest contenders were Tom and Gareth Renault with scores of 20. Nearest the pin on the short 6th saw Tom take the prize as the only player to keep on the green. Unfortunately, slow play in front of our groups meant Paul Brown had to make an early exit after the turn to ensure he made an ABBA tribute concert!

On the back nine, Keith topped the scoring with 18 as the rest of the field struggled. The second nearest the pin went unclaimed.

Despite being unable to maintain his early form, congratulations to Bruce for holding on to his lead to take the overall honours with a score of 37. Gareth Renault ran him close with a score of 36 and an impressive raw score of 80. John took third with a score of 35.

Our next meeting will see us take on the Chilworth course on 22 July. Look forward to seeing everyone there.

Tom.

Southwick Park Apr 2023

With a bit of warmth finally in the air the with seven tucking into coffee and bacon rolls. The course was in tip top condition as was the weather.
The scores didn't quite reflect that with the highest front by Steve was 14 points, then most others on 11.
Scores improved a bit on the back 9 with Steve matching his front nine of 14 making 28.
Andy Sweeney to NP on the front wih Rob taking Longest drive on the back.
Well done to Steve for winning the day on 28 and a shot cut. Everyone else had a 1 shot increase apart from Jacob who for the first time was organisor of the day.

Next event Chilworth

Avisford Mar 2023

The rain stayed away for the 6 people who turned up to play. The front nine holes were wet and spongy which made it very difficult when chipping and putting. What had been written on previous games Jacob was still playing pin ball with the trees. Andy had a score of 19 with me John E close behind. Lyn only played nine holes, then retired to the club house and put her feet up. Well played Lyn. Then across the road for the back nine. 13th across the valley was won by me John E, hit the bank at back and rolled down on to the green. The 14th nearest the pin was won by Rob. Back to the club house for a nice hot coffee and the scores. Andy and John E were both level with 31 points, but on count back John E was the winner. Thanks to all those who played and well done me. I will not be playing until July as will be away on holiday.

Tilgate Forest Feb 2023

Nine made it to Tilgate Forest and for many it was the first round of golf for the year.

First 9 holes saw 5 of the group only make single figures but no trouble for Andy Sweeny who had an impressive 19 points and shooting straight in down the flag on the 9th from 50 yards out.

Jacob had a good time playing pinball with the trees apparently 4 trees at once in one shot.

Nearest the pin on the 5th hole saw a good shot from Robert take the prize and nearest the pin on the 15th saw Jacobs shot trickle on the green to be the only one to make it on.

Back 9 saw most people shoot better scores but Andy sadly couldn't keep up his front nine form and with Roberts consistent play he ended up with 33 points with Andy coming in second with 28.

Not a bad day out on a course with some nice holes, the greens were not amazing but I couldn't blame that for my one handed missed putt from 2 inches (i wont be so lazy and get a ball marker in future)
Definitely a club where you had to keep a look out, i've never seen so many ramblers / cyclists crossing and walking alongside the fairways

Nice to see everyone, look forward to the next match
