Hillbarn February 2012

Twelve dwindled to nine as buggies were unavailable due to frost and the impending snow. Brian Kay started well by trying to take Nigel's trolley. Think he was trying to impress his nephew Darren he had brought along. The front 9 saw Bruce leading with 20 Steve and Phil L 18, Brian and Phil H 17.
The back 9 leader with 21 was Nigel followed by Alan 20, Lyn and Darren 18.
There also seemed to be a lack of control by some players on the back nine with trolleys meandering down the hills.

The cards were checked and all nine players were within four shots of each other.(30 to 34)
With Lyn and Darren both on 34 Lyn won after count back.
Nearest the pin on the 11th was Phil H and longest drive was on 12th but no one found the fairway so we tried again on the 16th which Alan took with a drive to the 150 yard marker.

A good day with very close scores despite the cold weather. All handicaps to stay the same except Lyn 36 to 35.
Well done to Lyn for her first win.

Thanks to Nigel stepping in Andy's shoes to organise this months meeting.

Chiddingfold Dec 2011.

Despite the forecast of rain, excesses of Xmas cheer, ten turned up at Chiddingfold having been organised by Steve. The rain very nearly held off for everyone which was appreciated. The course as expected was a bit damp with the greens being bit unpredictable. but it is the middle of winter. The bacon rolls and coffee went down well prior to the game.
Front 9 saw Andy Sweeney with 18 points (which included 2 blobs.) Phil L 17, then John P, John E, Steve and Bruce all on 15.
Nearest the green on 3rd was obviously too early in the game as we all missed it. It was therefore moved to the 12th. with Steve being the only contender.
Nigel held longest drive initially till Bruce finally managed to keep one on the fairway.
Back nine Leader was Nigel with 20, John P 18, Andy S & Steve with 16,
With the cards handed in with 3 on 33 points, rumour control took over with potentially 3 players trying to check the count backs Having checked the cards on the laptop it revealed that Andy had missed one point he was entitled to and returned 34. to win the match.

Overall winner on 34 Point Andy Sweeney who is cut to 27, Three other increases are Bruce to 17, Brian Kay to 26 Keith Beilby 27.

As Andy is unable to play at the next event so Nigel was "Volunteered/Pushed" into organise Januarys match.

A good day out enjoyed by all.

Cathedral Nov 2011- Prize Giving Match

To mark the Prize giving evening a match was arranged between us and the Monday Friday Vets gang which includes some of our players. We Totalled 16 players + some random player that zippy found to make up a three ball. All the stableford points for each side were added together at the end which resulted in the Vets winning the day by 11 points. Bruce, John P and Brian K were laying for the vets.

The front saw Phil Lee with 15, Phil H 14, Steve 13 Nearest the pin on 4th left blank. 6th, 13th and 15th. were taken by Phil Lee. Longest drive on 14th John P using his trusty 3 wood again.

The back nine saw John P with 20 points, Phil L 19, Alan 17.

Winner of the day as Phil Lee with 34.
After the match all went home and brushed themselves down and put on their glad rags for a brilliant evening at the Yacht Club with a meal and entertainment and the odd drink or three.

Avisford Park October 2011

John P finally managed to organise a complete game on his own at last, Well done! Numbers finally settled at 15 teeing of a bit late due to fog delaying the early morning Tees. The weather was overcast course was a bit damp and ooooh what lovely greens. All those cute little holes making the ball hop, skip and jump in any direction other than straight.
This didn't seem to affect some with Nigel leading the front 9 with 20 points with Colin 19 and Keith W on 18. Longest drive on 4th saw Alan smiling as he wrote his name on it.

Nearest the pin on the 13th saw all of the third group thinking for two or so moments they could rejoice till Phil H. got just inside Nigel.
Steve put together a brilliant back 9 scoring 22 points which included a blob. Alan, John P and Lyn on 19, Bruce, Colin and Lawrence on 18.

All add up the results
1st Steve 38
2nd Colin 37
3rd Nigel 34

It has been noted that 4 players finished on 29, was this handicap protection??. Steve drops two shots to 22, Colin drops to 23. there are 6 increases

WILDWOOD September 2011

Eleven players met at Wildwood at 7am for coffee and bacon rolls for an 8.12 Tee. The sun had just about risen and was helping to burn off the mist - haze.  Phil Hawkes seemed a bit more determined this year as the defending champion and scored 18 on the first 9 , Alan 17 Bruce John Green and Brian Kay next with 14.
Most seemed to settle down for the second 9 with Phil scoring another 18 points Alan 16 and John Green 16, Brian Kay and John P 15.
Light Lunch and a reshuffle leaders going out last.
1st Group Colin 23, Keith R 18,  Nigel  23 and Roger 19

Steve brought home 22 points, Phil 21, John P and Nigel 17, Alan and Brian K 15.

Totalling the scores Phil Hawkes with 57 points (9 ahead of the next) was the clear winner of the Cup with  2nd Alan 48, 3rd Steve 46.

Nearest the pins 3rd,11th and 20th all went to Phil as did the Longest Drive 22nd.
Roger received the longest Drive on the 13th

An excellent day Organised by Lyn who sadly couldn't play

Longest Drive went to Alan.

Slinfold June 2011

John Edwards organised a good day this month with sunshine most of the day but a down pour on the last couple of holes spoiling the fun for the last two groups. The course was in good shape with very very tricky greens. Fast and unforgiving is the polite term I guess.

The first hole gave some of us a few problems with nine in total blobbing the hole.
Alan and Phil L  led the the front 9 with 18, Bruce & Lyn on 16, Colin 15, with Brian K, John P, Steve, and Andy all on 13.

Nearest the pin on 7th was taken by Lyn being the only one managing to stop on the green.

The back 9 saw a charge by Bruce and Brian K with 21, Alan 18, Lawrence 17, Colin 16, John P and Keith B 14,

The Longest Drive was held by Bruce in the second group

Handicaps - 1 going down and 9 going up.

Blacknest May 2011

The weather forecasters managed to get it wrong again, thankfully the thundery showers arrived as sunshine. The course had benefited from a lot of rain the previous couple of nights but the greens had been top dressed so they were not at their best. Sixteen of us joined in the bacon rolls and ventured onto the course. The course was a bit like marmite love or hate with a small majority liking it, with fairways going over one another and shared tee box areas.

The front nine saw 3 points separating the top 7 players, Phil H leading with 19 points,
Lawrence, John E, Alan and Phil L all on 18 then Keith Wannell and Andy on 16 points.

The back nine had longest drive on 11th going to Keith Beilby and nearest the pin on the cheeky short island hole to Keith Rutter. Guess the practice last week help...

There were 4 points separating the top 8 players, Steve brought in 19 points, Lawrence and Keith R on 17, Phil H, John E and Lyn on 16, Alan and Phil L 15 points.

The first group including Phil Hawkes and Keith Rutter took on the onerous task for score card checking and gave their verdicts to the Captain who duly awarded the First prize to Phil Hawkes with 35 points.
On checking the cards properly at home, the actual winner should have been Lawrence also on 35 points and would have taken it on count back ( yes phil count back yet again).

Our illustrious Captain was consulted and decided Phil to retained the prize as Lawrence hadn't checked his scoring properly and both to loose a shot for winning.

West Chiltington March 2011

Once the misty morning lifted it became a nice golfing day. The fast greens were causing a few problems with some three or more putting. Four 3 balls playing Hidden Pairs by way of a change.
Nearest the pin on hole three saw Bruce taking it from Steve. Alan and Bruce led the front 9 with 17 points, with phil H 16, Phil L 15, John E 14.

John P Led the back 9 with 16 points, Bruce, Phil H, Phil L, Brian K all on 14, Lyn, Keith W and Steve on 12.

When all the cards were in, the draw for hidden partners was made which resulted in Lyn and Bruce wining the team prize. The results were,

Bruce 31 & Lyn 25 = 56
Phil H 30 & John E 24 = 54
Phil L 29 & Keith W 23 = 52
John P 25 & Steve 21 = 46
Brian K 26 & Nigel 19 = 45
Keith R 9 & Alan 28 = 37

The new handicap system being used resulted in Bruce down one shot, Phil H staying the same and all other players going up one shot.

Foxbridge Feb 2011

Alan organised a good day out and despite previous rain the course was a only bit wet in places. The sun came out briefly and a few drops of rain.
Nearest the pin on the 5th had three names on it, the last being Lyn in the last group. Bruce was leading the pack with 24 points at the turn with Colin and John P on 22, John E 18, Steve 17, Phil H and Lawrence 16.
The back nine had the longest Drive on the 16th With two names with Bruce being the last. Steve brought in 24 points, Colin 19, John P 18, Bruce and Lyn 17, Keith, Lawrence and Phil H on 16.

It was a close finish with the results following countback for the top three on 41 points set the order as follows
1. Steve 41
2. Colin 41
3. Bruce 41
4. John P 40
5. Phil H 32
6. John E 32
7. Lyn 29
8. Keith R 29
9. Lawrence 29
10. Alan 28
11. Brian K 26
12. Nigel 26
13. Keith W 16

A great competition with 1 point separating the top 4 then 5 points separating the next 8 players. The average return was a staggering 31.5 points.

Handicap adjustments
Steve 25 to 23
Colin 24 to 23
Bruce 17 to 16
Keith W 24 to 25

January 2011 Cathedral

John Parsons carried on where he left off last month and actually organized the day (well nearly). John had his wish and we played a Texas scramble. The course was rather damp underfoot with most of the water being back in the Rife. 12 split into 4 * 3 balls. Teams were
1.  Bruce, Steve and John G   using 7 handicap
2.  Lyn, John E and Phil L       using 7 handicap
3.  Keith R, Alan and Colin     using 5 handicap
4.  John P, Nigel and Roger    using 7 handicap

At the turn it was anyone's game with gross scores of Team 3 - 38, Team 2 - 40, Team 4 - 41, Team 1 - 43, We did not have a longest drive or nearest the pin as it was teams. On the back 9 Gross scores were Team 3 - 33, Team 1 - 34, Team 2 -39 (on countback) Team 4 - 39.

All added up the net scores are as follows
Team 3 - 66
Team 1 - 70
Team 2 - 72
Team 4 - 73

Well done to the winning team of Keith R, Alan and Colin.
John P was using an excuse of having a flat battery and having to push his trolley from the 12th.
Bruce's excuse was a bad back, but all had a good day.

December 2010 (Nearly) Goodwood Park

John Parsons organised this months outing good deal with bacon roll coffee 18 holes and hot soup after at a very good price. Unfortunately it was not to be. The golfing gods had seen fit to freeze everywhere or cover in snow and the course was closed so it was all cancelled. It was that bad that even Chichester Golf course had closed.
John was able to retrieve all monies he had paid so no cost to anyone or the society (Well done John)

November 2010 Tower / Dinner - Prize giving

Last minute chopping and changing left 15 players venturing onto the slightly damp tower course. we all had fingers crossed that the dry forecast was going to be correct, which it was.
Lyn finally got her own way and introduced dancing to the game. It was the team game called the Waltz. 1,2 3, 1,2,3. was all that could be heard. 1 best score on the first, 2 best scores on the second, then 3 best scores for the third. Then back to 1 score on the 4th, 2 for the 5th, etc etc.

Bruce's team managed to get ahead of the game by scoring 38 on the front with Phil Lees next on 34, then Steve's 31, then Brian K 27, Keith's on 20 (not sure if they were scoring correctly or not too well. but I'm told they really had a laugh) No nearest the pins or longest drives.
The back 9 saw Phil L's 39, Steve's 35, Bruce's and Brian's 33, Keith's 27.

Doing the maths ended up with Phil L's team on 73, Bruce's 71, Steve's 66, Brian K's 60 and the Keith's still laughing with 47.

Apart from the golf this was the day the Captain had organised a sumptuous evening meal at BRYC  for players and their significant other halves and guests. All required to report at the club before 6.30pm for a surprise which did cause a lot of discussion during the game. Lyn did not succumb to the threats to sabotage her battery to reveal what the surprise was to be.

On arrival at the Club the surprise was revealed to be Dean Nicholas an illusionist who kept us surprised before and after the meal giving some really astounding - unbelievable tricks.
A superb three course meal served by the galley had rounded off a really enjoyable day.

The presentation of Prizes took place after the meal with Best Aggregate Scores to Bruce. Most Improved to Brian K, The First Pairs League Competition to Brian K and Keith R and finally after being runner up on count back two years running (nearly a third year) The Captains Cup to Phil H. All the ladies being treated to a small token of appreciation with a decorative paper weight and Lyn a beautiful bouquet of flowers for organising us all throughout the year.

Thanks to Colin in masterminding the evening event.

October 2010 Chiddingfold

Steve volunteered to organise this months game which proved to be another success. Steve invited newcomer Andy Sweeney making 13 players in all.
The Chiddingfold course has come back to life following Cowdray taking over. There is still work to be done but still an enjoyable course. The 18th green only being 3 months old was very interesting to say the least.
John E lead the front 9 with 21 points Bruce 19, Keith, Alan, Brian C and Steve all on 18 the closest front 9 for a long time. Nearest the pin had more than one name on it for a change with Brian K as the winner.

Chiddingfold kindly donated a two ball prize to us which was used for nearest the pin on the 13th. Nigel almost put his name on it using his famous dam buster shot, bouncing it off the lake nearly onto the green but the last name on the marker was John Edwards. Longest Drive on the 17th went to John Green.

Keith stormed the back 9 with 24 points, Brian K 20, John E and Bruce 17, Allan, Brian C and Nigel 16, Steve and Lyn on 15.

The results of the day deserved some handicap adjustments. Four Reductions were Keith to 13, John E to 24, Bruce to 18 and Brian K to 23. Its about time I hear you all say.
Colin creeping up to 24.

Keith winning the day with a massive 42 points.

Keith 42

Bruce 36
Brian K 35
Alan 34
Brian C 34
Steve 33
Nigel 29

Lyn 27

Colin 24
Andy 19

Thanks again to Steve for a great day.

Captains Cup 2010 - Wildwood

Yet again Lyn organised another superb Captains Cup. With the mist hanging over the course on arrival and the sun burning it away during the ceremonial bacon roll and coffee. Twelve gathered, which included Alan Noble - Phil's Guest, on the first Tee over the pond on A Course. Always a interesting hole. Longest drive on the 9th being taken by Keith Rutter. The front 9 had Phil, John P on 17, Bruce and Colin on 16, Steve 14,John G and Alan 13 and Brian C 12.

Nearest the pin on 12th was embarrassingly untouched. Phil maintained another steady 17 on the back with  Keith 15, Bruce 13 Brian C 12, John G 10.
Positions after the first 18 were Phil 34, Bruce 29, Brian C 24, Colin 24, John G 23, John P 23, Keith 21, Steve 21, Brian K 17, Nigel 15, Lyn 14.

All stopped for a light lunch of ham eggs and chips and regrouping for the last 9 on Course C. Keith was out done by Alan to nearest the pin on hole 2. Having not used nearest the pin earlier we reused it on the 6th hole - well nearly - Steve allegedly getting nearest to the actual green. Brian Clist couldn't cope with being in the top group and somehow feigned a nose bleed on the 1st hole. I think this was one of his tactics to put us off. but we persevered but by the 4th hole Colin and Brian's buggy run out of steam and they decided to head for the bar.

On the back 9 Bruce scored 17 Steve 16, Nigel and Phil 13 Brian K 12, John P 11, Keith 8, John G 6, Lyn 5. Keith seemed to be having troubles seeing balls and drove over at least two that we know of ( should have gone to spec savers)

We all know Phil Hawkes plays really well but has come 2nd on count back two years running for the Captains Cup. ( all together Ah).  On the last green history was about to be repeated. If Bruce  sunk a 5 foot putt he would equal Phil and win the Cup, yet again on count back. A misread of the green left Bruce a 5 inch putt, giving Phil the win. Well done Phil at Last.

All the results can be seen on the Cap cup results link.

Thanks yet again to Lyn for all of the preparation for the day which made it run so smoothly, together with a little help from Steve and John G on score cards.

Thanks to All

Bruce

PS Thanks to Keith for donating Longest and Nearest markers - They are Orange things on a stick.- a demonstration will be given before the next match.

PPS Having read this Lyn says thanks to Bruce

August 2010 Goodwood Park

Keith Rutter volunteered again to organise another Society game which yet again was spot on. Well all the spots came in the form of rain, which cleared up for most of the round thank goodness. We had a dozen meet up for the bacon roll and a bit of banter with Keith's brother Ian making it a bakers dozen. Keith and Colin wimped out and shared a buggy.

Nearest the pin on the 8th saw a bit of revenge by Colin actually beating John P for a change. Phil Lee lead the way on 20 points with Brian K and Ian Rutter on 19, Colin on 17 with everyone else between 12 and 15. So it was all to play for against the increasing wind.

Longest drive 12th saw only one name - Steve who actually managed to stay on a fairway. Phil Lee maintained his performance with 19 points Steve on 18 then Brian K, Keith R, Roger on 15, and all the others between 11 and 14, Considering the conditions a good day after all.

Thanks again to Keith

Bruce

July 2010 Wickham Park

Eleven members duly arrived at Wickham Park on a fine warm sunny day with a breeze to keep us cool.  One of us decided to come an hour early and could not wait for his bacon roll so he had a full breakfast and then he couldn’t eat his roll so Phil H stepped in to assist.

The captain & Keith R set off first in a buggy, followed by Lyn, Nigel & John G,  then Bruce, Roger & Phil L with Steve, Phil H & Zippy bringing up the rear. Phil L & H, Steve & Bruce made very good progress in the front nine and indeed continued that progress to the end with Bruce gaining 3rd spot on count back from Phil H on 38 points and Phil L gaining an advantage on Steve in the final three holes to win on count back on 39 points.

The captain, having allowed his breakfast to settle, made a charge on the back nine to come fifth on 35 points. No jokes in this report on the supporting staff, just to say she so nearly won the longest drive only for Phil H to surpass.  As for nearest the pin, rumour had it that he scuffed his shot so badly and yet still managed to roll onto the green towards the pin, well done Phil L.

Finally a rendition of “happy birthday to you” was sung to Nigel. Another year to go before he gets his bus pass (well that's what he says)!! But that did not give him an excuse for throwing his club behind him after a shot unless the barbed wire fence got to him!

A date for your diary please that the next meeting is to be held on Saturday 21st August. Venue TBA,  but I have been given lot of suggestions.

Thanks.  Keith R

Some high scores were returned and 4 handicaps have changed.  On checking the cards there were a few irregularities. Card not signed, wrong score signed for on two cards. Please be aware that these are things that you could get disqualified for.

Checking out the best 6 scores for this year Phil Lee has taken the lead with 5 points ahead of Bruce so it will all rest on the last game.

June 2010 Slinfold

A Super day with sunshine with some arriving very early (Sorry) Winner of the Day was Phil Lee with 35 points followed by Phil H on 34 and Roger on 33 - Nearest the Pin Lyn. with longest drive going to John G.
Due to circumstances beyond my control which you are aware, there will be a delay in publishing the full results.

May 2010 Foxbridge

A dozen of us returned to Foxbridge Golf Course but this time it was beautiful wall to wall sunshine, which set the scene for a much better game. Keith Beilby a guest of Brian Kay joined us making it a bakers dozen.( Is it about time we found guests not name Keith or John!). Three 3 balls and one 4 ball teeing off. The course had dried out and became quite testing at times with two flags on each green.
On the first loop nearest the pin on a well protected 5th green surrounded by bunkers went to Nigel who with 21 points also led at the turn. Next Phil Lee and John Green on 20, Bruce 19, Steve on 17, Brian C and Colin on 16, Keith B and Roger on 15. Lyn and Brian K on 13. Keith R 12, John E on 11.

Colin put his name on the longest drive on the 16th but was taken by Bruce who just managed to roll down a slope back onto the fairway by a foot.

The back 9 saw Keith B storm home with 25 points, Brian Kay 23, Bruce 22, John G and Roger on 20, Nigel 19,

Keith Beilby and Bruce finished on a massive 41 points with Keith winning on countback. Next with 40 points Nigel and John Green.
A mistake on Keiths B's card was revealed on inputing to the computer. He actually scored 40 points and was placed 2nd.
Corrected results are as below.

1. Bruce         41       2. Keith Beilby     40        3. John G       40           4. Nigel       40
5. Brian K      36       6. Roger              35        7. Phil L         33            8. Steve      32
9. Brian C       30     10. Colin               28      11. Lyn            26          12. John E    25
13. Keith R     25

I think the results speak for themselves that all had a really good day with a pleasant after match chinwag.

There were 4 players whos handicaps have dropped by a shot or more and one by nearly a shot - for details see round results..

April 2010 Rusper

Organised by Colin with twelve players taking part. He remembered to order the glorious weather and due to the Icelandic Volcano Ash, all airports were closed so no low flying planes made for a peaceful day, except for a tiger moth squadron flyover. Making our way round in 3 ball groups with nearest the pin on the 4th proved interesting with the stroke index of 18 no one actually stopped on the green but Roger took the prize as he got a Hole in One. Leaders on the turn John P and Roger on 18 , Brian K 17, then Phil L, Phil H and Keith R 14.

As we all know the course gets tighter and tighter on the back nine which was reflected in the scores. 4 players on 10 points being John P Keith Rutter, John G and Nigel, then Brian K, Phil L and Phil H on 8.

Brian Clist retired after the twelth with a bad back and had to beg steal and borrow to get a drink whilst waiting for the car keys to get his own money. ( well thats was his excuse this time).

Longest drive on the 16 was taken by Nigel as he managed to keep his ball on the fairway. Roger did the honourable thing and stood a round of drinks having had the hole in one. He also gets his name on the Club Board, Well done Roger.

John P was overall winner on 28 points on his last game with us, before his operation. We all wish him well with a speedy recovery for the Captains Cup.

1. John Parsons       28            2. Brian Kay 25            3. Keith Rutter 24

Foxbridge March 2010

The organising of this meeting fell to Phil Hawkes following the draw at a previous meeting. He managed to organise a game for 10 Society members and Phil found two stragglers he called friends Dave and young Fred who joined us.
We played a team game of split 6's. Teams of three, best score on the first 6, best two scores on the next 6 and best three on the last 6.
Phil unfortunately forgot to order the sunshine. It was overcast and misty, followed by rain with a good drop of wind thrown in. Not the best weather for golf. So much so, the last three groups gave up after the 9th hole due to the extremely bad playing conditions. It was not possible to find relief from casual water on the greens.
On speaking to the Pro shop they kindly gave us vouchers to play the course properly on another occasion. Phil, Dave and Fred were playing really well and were so far in front of the other groups that they were unaware the competition had been cancelled by the Captain.
The prizes were to be a sleeve of balls each for the Winning Team and one sleeve to the best personal stableford score.
On Phil's return he was somewhat choked to find having played his heart out and shot 1 over course par, he still didn't win anything.
Thanks again to Phil for organising the day.

Next game is on Sat 18th April being organised by Colin.

Tower Feb 2010

Following some last minute changes, 12 reached the Tee on a cold overcast but dry day. Myles joined us again and volunteered a drop in handicap to 17. Just as well really as he led on the front 9 with 18 points. John G 16, Richard and Phil L 15, Joshua and Bruce 14. Roger's wheel fell off his trolley so he united in the Buggy with John P and played the rest of the course for fun.

Nearest the pin on 3 marker remained unmarked on the fringe of the green by the last group as no one had hit the green. On the Sunday Bruce and Lyn played the course again Bruce took nearest the pin on 3 but 24 hrs too late, but we recaptured the marker.

On the Back 9, the Longest drive on the 12 was initially Lyn, then Nigel but finally our out going Captain Brian Clist finally pulled one out the bag to take the prize. Not sure if that was what caused the problem but he retired after the twelth with a back problem. He walked the rest of the course with Myles who scored another 18 points, as did John Green. Richard on 16, Joshua and John P 15.

As we had all failed on nearest the pin on 3, nearest the pin was changed to the 14th. A bit more of a challenge that we all thought would be safe against the wind. But Roger struck a really fine shot to land some 5 foot from the pin.

Following a discussion there were no other nominations for Captain and all were reminded of the forthcoming AGM together with any points they need to raise.

So overall results are as follows

1 Myles Wilson 36 2 John Green 34 3 Richard Parker 31
4 Joshua Atfield 29 5 John Parsons 28 6 Phil Lee 28
7 Brian Kay 27 8 Bruce Santer 25 9 Lyn Santer 23
10 Nigel Etheridge 21 11 Brian Clist 19 12 Roger Leverton 5

Cathedral Jan 2010

Following the snow fall and all courses being closed the Outing was postponed for a week. The course was somewhat damp following the snow thaw and the lots of rain with a bakers dozen teeing off. The forecast was sun which was rather shy but it didn't rain.

Three 3 ball and one four ball all starting with anticipation of what was to come. At the turn round Phil L was out in front with 15 points Phil H 13, John G and new comer Richard Parker on 12, Bruce and Lyn on 11, John P 10, Brian K Nigel and Keith R on 9 , Colin and Keith 7, John E 3.

There were reports of some 'skilful' players bouncing some shots across the water - well there was rather a lot of it.

The back nine with nearest the pin on the 15th going to Bruce with longest drive on the 18th deservedly going to Phil H.

Leader of the back 9 with 21 was Bruce, then Phil L Phil H John G on 19, Richard P 18 John P 17, Colin 15, Keith and Nigel 14, John E 12, Lyn 11, Brian K 9and Keith W 7.

Final scores
1. Phil Lee 34 2. Bruce Santer 32 3. Phil Hawkes 32
4. John Green 31 5. Richard Parker 30 6. John Parsons 27
7. Keith Rutter 23 8. Nigel Etheridge 23 9. Colin Lindsell 22
10. Lyn Santer 22 11. Brian Kay 18 12. John Edwards 15
13. Keith Wannell 14

The only handicap movement is John Green new handicap of 24 having dropped from 24.8 to 24.4.

Tower Nov 2009

Following three weeks of rain the skies actually cleared for the day. The Greens were good but fairways rather muddy underfoot. Two three balls and one four ball Tee'd of in the strong westerly wind making things quite interesting to say the least.

Nearest the pin on the 3rd went to Bruce and at the turn Bruce had on 19 points, Nigel 18, Phil L, Keith Rutter and Brian Clist on 14, Steve 13,
Brian K and Roger 12, John G 11, Lyn 10.

Onto the back nine. Bruce and Steve 20 points, Brian K 18, Phil L 14, John G 13, Keith Nigel and Roger 12, Lyn 11, Brian C 9. Bruce put his name on the Longest Drive on the 12th and kept it.

Cathedral Oct 2009

Numbers dwindled to nine for this event on the Cathedral and it was decided to play a team game. We had three three balls with only one best stableford score to counting.
Teams were Group 1. Bruce, Brian C and John E. Group 2. John G, Myles and Steve Group 3. Lyn, Phil L and John P.
The forecast was nearly right, it did stop raining just after 9am. Group 1 teeing off at 10.08 but then it started raining at 10.10. not to stop until group three actually arrived in the club house and the sun came out. This almost tested out the our new nearest the pin markers in 2 on the 10th but no one managed it, so it wasn't tested.

Scores at the half way - Group 1. 13, Group 2. 19 and Group 3. 20

John Parsons excelling with 17 personal points, , Steve 14, John Green 13, Phil Lee 11.

No one managed to reach the green in two on the tenth. Myles woke up on the back 9 scoring 18, John Green and Steve 0n 16 Phil on 15, John E on 14

The back 9 group scores were Group 1. 19, Group 2. 23 and Group 3 19

Final scores being
Group 2 42
Group 3 39
Group 1 32

Group 2 Steve, John G and Myles were awarded a sleeve of balls each for the overall winning group. Nearest the pin wasn't awarded so it was decided to award the sleeve of balls to the best individual score which went to Steve with 30 points.

On checking the scores, there were various mistakes which didn't affect the results.

Handicap movements from this game Bruce up to 21 and John Ewards Up to 25.

Apart from the drizzly rain it was a good day.

Captains Cup 2009

Lyn did us proud yet again with super golfing weather, much welcomed food and a challenging course in good condition at Wildwood.
Fourteen reported for Bacon Rolls and coffee at 7am. Tee slots were 1 x 2 ball and 4 x 3 ball with buggy's used by some.

Course B saw nearest the pin to Phil Lee on hole 7 and Longest Drive 0n hole 8 to Bruce and Brian Clist scoring 18 points.
Course C saw Longest Drive to Bruce on hole 4 and nearest the pin to Roger on hole 6 with Phil Hawkes scoring 19 points.
The results at half time had were Phil H out in front with 34 Brian K and Bruce on 30, Roger 28, Keith and Steve on 26,
Colin and Brian C 25, John 24, Phil L and John E on 22, Nigel 21, John G 19 and Lyn 17

With Ham egg and chips devoured and groups reorganised into reverse order with three 4 balls and a three ball with Phil, Brian K and Bruce in the last group.
Course A saw nearest the pin to Steve on hole 2 with Roger (High on Pain Killers) longest Drive on 3
The results of the last 9 holes saw Bruce with 20, Steve and Lyn (sober this year) 18, Phil H on 16, Nigel 15, Phil L and Colin 14
Roger, John E and John G 13, John P 11, Keith and Brian K and Brian C 10

The 4 point lead Phil Hawkes had over Bruce and Brian K gradually slipped away with Phil and Bruce Level on 48 Points on the 9th (26th) Tee.
Bruce having a one shot advantage on the last hole which meant if Phil parred the hole and Bruce bogied the hole they would be level on points and
Bruce would win on countback.

Knowing this both made good drives with the green reachable for their second shots, Phil found the green and Bruce the greenside bunker.
Bruce then hit the green with both now on the green for net 2.
Phil was first to putt for a birdie to win the cup. Sadly just missing. Bruce then missed his putt for a net birdie.
Both then sunk their next putts which resulted in Phil scoring 16 and Bruce 20 giving them both 50 points overall with Bruce winning on Countback.

Following feed back about the match, there appears to be a requirement for a driving test for some buggy drivers. Using it to deflect someones golf ball or driving off before your passenger has got in or is half in the buggy is not quite fair play. Venting anger against course signs ( Next Tee) by a direct hit with a golf ball is also not on.
On a good note, well done to most players for marking their cards better just a few slip ups on points.

Avisford Park August 2009

The weather forecast was nearly right, unfortunately the rains came a couple of hours early and we all got a touch wet. Including the cards and the Pin markers which didn't make the prize giving in one piece.  Think Phil Hawkes must of known when having booked it for us he said he wasn't able to play?
However we were all in good spirits to start with as it hadn't started to rain. Four, four balls teeing off at 1100am on the parkland front 9. with the longest drive on the 8th, Keith Rutter was first to add his name, then came John P and took the longest drive.
After 9 holes Keith Wannell was 3 points ahead of the pack on 19 points then, Roger, John G, Colin, John P, and Brian K on 16.

The rain had started to set in as we were passing the Club house and full marks to all for not stopping for a drink or three and watching the Ladies Open in brilliant sunshine.

On to the back nine with the perilous 13th for nearest the pin going to Roger who just beat Keith W. The rains got heavier and new comer Phil Lee lead the pack with 18, Roger and Bruce on 17 Steve on 16,

Thank you to those that kept their cards dry - or wrote out new ones. It made checking the scores more practical. There were a few minor score adjustments. Considering the weather it was a close game with only 3 points separating the top 6 players.
Lyn, Keith Rutter and Colin all had an increase in handicaps with surprise surprise no cuts.

This has led to a reshuffle of the Best 6 Games Trophy with Bruce taking back the top place from Nigel by 4 points with Brian C in third Place.

The final results were Roger and Keith Wannell both on 33 with Roger taking it on countback, Bruce on 32, Phil 31, Steve and John G on 30.

1. Roger 33
2. Keith W 33

Rusper July 2009

Phil was very right when he said lets go to Rusper its an interesting course. We had a bakers dozen who found the course which is in the middle of nowhere but in the flight path for Gatwick which a couple of players found off putting. Getting to the end of a heat wave (for England any way) the sun stayed with us with a fluttering of nice rain drops for a few moments.

It was the weekend of the first round of the local Club Championship hence the course was in very good condition with lighting greens which were unfortunately not receptive and stopping on the green was tricky.

The first round saw Brian C on 19 (including 1 blob) 3 points ahead of John P, Nigel and Brian K on 15, Bruce, Steve and Keith R on 13, Phil 12 and Lyn 11. Nearest the pin on 4th - a very interesting choice with water on the right, ditches on the left with a very raised tee. John E first to scratch his name on the flag but beaten by Brian K in a following group.

The course became narrower and narrower the further we went.

Onto the back nine saw Nigel holding it together repeating his 15, then Brian C and Bruce 12, Steve and John G 11, Keith R and John P 10

This translates to Brian C winning on 31 points ( for the second month running) Well done. Bruce has awarded you a handicap cut - Now 25.  The only other movement was John Green up to 25.
Following a couple of minor corrections to stableford points ( including mine) The final results are:=
Brian Clist   31 24.6 Down
Nigel Etheridge   30 24.9
John Parsons   26 24.6
Bruce Santer   25 20.4
Steve Stickland   24 25.7
Keith Rutter   23 14.4
Brian Kay   22 25.6
John Green   20 24.5 Up
Phil Hawkes   20 5.8
Lyn Santer   19 28.4
John Edwards   18 24.3
Colin Lindsell   16 23.4
Richard Elsom   1 28

As you all know your best 6 Scores since November are added to the league table under Best 6 Ranks Bruce has been leading this following some good results and the 41 points at Crookhorn, but Nigel and Brian C have been busy and the currently there are only three points separating them with 1st Nigel 2nd Brian C and 3rd Bruce There is only a few games to go so anyone could take the cup.

Crookhorn June 2009

Four Tees booked with 15 players dropping to 13 teeing off. The weather broke on time with the sun coming out and yet again it was perfect golfing weather. This months visitors were Bruce Wilson from Australia son in law of Keith Rutter and Richard Elsom a BRYC member.

Front nine had Brian C and Colin arguing as usual with 20 points Brian K on 18, then Bruce and John E on 16, Nigel 15 John P 14, Keith W 13, Lyn on 12.

Onto the back nine with the nearest the pin on the 14th should have been nearest in two or may be three. The longest drive on the 15th was interesting choice with the long straight fairway to the hole with very nicely cut fairway sloping very well to the left. Bruce S in the first group popped his name on the flag till in the third group John P managed to to roll ahead by a couple of feet. But sending the Marshall to tell Bruce was a bit OTT.
Nigel found a new way of finding lost golf balls - killing and flattening the grass whilst taking relief.

Lyn woke up on the back nine with a respectable 17, Brian and Colin argued again with 13 each, Bruce, John E, Nigel and Keith W on 12,

Colins card showed him 33 with Brian C 32. On checking the cards Brian had not given himself enough points and actually had 33 points.
Following count back over the last nine didn't show a clear winner.
Countback over the last 6 holes saw Brian with 7 and Colin on 6.

Handicap moves
Lyn Down 29.8 down to 28.3 - New Playing handicap 28
Colin Down 23.7 down to 23.3 New Playing handicap 23

Results as below

1. Brian C       33           2. Colin       33          3. Lyn       29          4. Brian K         29
5. Bruce S      28            6. John E    28           7. Nigel    27           8. Keith W       25
9. John P        24          10. Steve      19         11. Keith R 14         12. Bruce W     14
13. Richard      6

Yet another wonderful day, very good course condition, greens good but a little bit wet and needed a little bit of a cut which made putting a bit slow.
